Sanjaya Baru's writing has always been an enjoyable journey into the past and current affairs of India. After the Accidental Primeminister, which was an insightful book on the epoch of Dr Manmohan Singh as PM of India, this book gives a great sweep of events that have shaped India and India's elite class since Independence.
The book shows how, at every turn of political power, the elite have remained largely in power. Its only with the advent of Modi since 2014, that the traditional elite are feeling marginalized, out of the power circle. And there is the crux of his relationship with popular media. However, Baru further elaborates how new elite will take the place of old elite to shape India's destiny.
Its such an enjoyable reading style that I finished the entire book in 3 days. If you wish to unravel the undercurrents of politics in India, this book is a must read.
